The city hauler takes a couch by appointment, and charges by the piece

Oregon City has been an incorporated city since 1844, the first west of the Rockies, and it runs its own garbage franchise. The hauler is Oregon City Garbage Company, and the City Commission sets the maximum rates it can charge by resolution.

That franchise includes bulky items, but not a free pickup. You call the office or use the web form, set the item next to your can, and the charge lands on your next bill. The schedule that took effect July 1, 2026 lists a couch at $16.50, a fridge, freezer or AC unit at $44, other appliances at $22 and an innerspring mattress at $11. Carrying an item out from inside adds $5.50, plus $9.90 for each flight of stairs.

For one or two pieces by the can, take it. It stops working when the pile is a garage, a basement or a whole floor. Then the company’s own menu switches to a truck at $73 an hour with one person, $105 with two, or a drop box you fill yourself. That is where we start: we load, and you get one price by volume before we arrive.

Three terraces and a 130 foot elevator

Oregon City is stacked. The town sits on three terraces that climb from about 50 feet above the river to more than 250, which is why a 130 foot municipal elevator joins Main Street to the bluff. For a junk job the terrace decides the work: where the truck can stop, how far we carry, how many stairs.

Downtown, meters run 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday, so for a shop cleanout or an apartment above a storefront we plan the truck spot first. On the bluff and in Canemah the streets tend to be older and narrower, and driveways are often short or missing. Send photos, we pick the spot, and if a long carry or a second flight of stairs changes the price you hear it before you book.

What Oregon City houses hand us

Canemah. A riverboat town from the 1850s to the 1870s on the ledge above the falls, annexed in 1928 and still 41 blocks. Old houses, low basements, sheds that predate the car. A lot of this comes out by hand.

The bluff and McLoughlin. Homes here date from the 1870s into the early 1900s. What comes out is attics, lath and plaster from a remodel, and the contents of a long tenure, all at once.

Hilltop. Mostly mid-century ranches off Molalla Avenue, with an attached garage and a shed at the back. A Hilltop job is usually a garage bay or a downsizing, and the truck backs straight in.

Park Place. This is where the city is growing. The concept plan brings about 500 acres and up to 1,459 new homes into the east side, and the 16 acre Clackamas Heights site is being rebuilt into 200 homes by fall 2027. New construction means move-in waste: packing, and furniture that did not survive the move.

Rentals near the college. Clackamas Community College sits on 165 acres off Molalla Avenue, and the apartments around it turn over with the academic year, which means abandoned units: a bed, a couch and the kitchen.

Where it goes, and what it costs

Metro South is at 2001 Washington Street, a few minutes from Main Street. Metro charges $176.70 a ton with a $51 minimum, and that fee is already inside our price. TVs, monitors and computers go free under Oregon E-Cycles, up to 7 pieces a trip, and we pass that on.

Do stairs in Canemah or on the bluff cost extra? The first flight is included. Past that it is $25 a flight, and you hear it when you book, not on the driveway.

Do you take mattresses in Oregon City? Yes. A mattress or box spring has its own single item price on the pricing page, and in a bigger load it just takes its share of the truck.
